Home' Ignition Annual : April 1st 2011 Contents 7
BACK in the 70s, a bright orange Ford
Falcon would roll into various south-
west district racetracks with an important
cargo on board. The Hose family would
then step out in their finery, ready for a
full day at the races.
The patriarch, Percival (Perc) Hose was
ready for his day's duties, climbing a high
tower with his camera in preparation for
the photo finishes. It was a job he enjoyed,
but certainly couldn't relax in.
"I didn't like the pressure when they
were running down the front straight,
and I would sometimes experience
heart palpitations," Mr Hose laughed,
explaining that with the thought of his
camera failing would be the main cause of
His son, David, would often accompany
him up the tower. Back in the days when
digital photography was unheard of,
David would often stand in a darkroom
waiting for photos to be developed.
It was the start of a long association
between David and the racetrack. In
January this year, David racked up 25
years of service to the Warrnambool
Racing Club in general maintenance ---
the area in which he specialises.
"I'm a jack of all trades, master of none,"
David explained. But David isn't the
only winning runner in the family, as his
mother Edna served in an administration
role for the club for 28 years. His sister,
Sue Van Rooy, then took over her mother's
reins some years later --- a position she
has held for just over a decade.
The Hose name is synonymous with
racing around the Warrnambool racetrack
traps and the family is looking forward to
the upcoming May Racing Carnival.

and putting out spot fires,"Ms Van Rooy
"I treat this place as home."
