Quality was mixed, with
many consignments of lambs
being tail-end drafts, although
one or two agents had good
runs of heavy and extra-heavy
Limited competition re-
sulted in cheaper prices, with
most lambs selling $5-8/head
cheaper, but sheep remained
close to unchanged.
The lightweight 2-score
lambs made $76-88/head,
while light trade weight 2
and 3-scores brought $88-98/
head or 450-510c/kg carcass
Medium weight 3-score
lambs sold from $95-124/head
or 460-520c/kg carcass weight.
Heavy 4-score lambs made
$110-148/head, while the few
extra-heavy 4 and 5-score pens
brought $133-155/head. The
heavy lambs made 440-500c/
kg carcass weight.
A good supply of heavy
hoggets in 3 to 5-score condi-
tion sold from $96-115/head or
330-400c/kg carcass weight.
A mixed selection of sheep
saw most sell at close to last
week's prices, with a run
of 2 to 4-score ewes making
275-335c/kg and wethers up to
415c/kg carcass weight.
Medium to heavyweight
ewes sold from $56-98/head,
while extra-heavy 5-scores
sold to $110/head.
Lightweight wethers made
$72-88/head, while medium
weight Merinos brought $116,
with one pen bought by a
restocker for $112/head.
Heavyweight rams, especially
the Merino's, sold well and
made from $68-102/head.

Store sale returns with
vigour after winter break
HAMILTON'S monthly store
cattle sale made a strong
return last Thursday after
a three-month hiatus during
the quiet winter months.
The advertised 700-head
yarding was downgraded to
600 after some producers had
difficulty getting cattle from
the farm to the market. The
yarding would have been
stronger again had a boat
order from Russia, through
Landmark, not cut supply.
"A lot of people are look-
ing to lighten their herds
up a bit," said Landmark's
Hugh Douglas, "but we
haven't had a wet winter
like this in a long time so
the cattle are very much in
While numbers were
down a few hundred head
on traditional trends, prices
were very solid to a shade
cheaper, with both steers
and heifers meeting strong
Hereford grown steers,
525kg, made the best money,
with a pen of nine Yarram
Park-blood offered by ven-
dor Lone Star selling for
$992 or 189 cents a kilogram
Lighter, young steers,
mostly Angus, Angus cross
and Hereford, sold strongly,
ranging from $659-803 a head,
with some pens nudging
It was feeders and breed-
ers doing the buying at the
sale, with steers selling
mostly locally to be finished
on grass, and well-bred
heifers either going on to be
joined or fed on grain at a
later date by backgrounders.
With the exception of a pen
of five 272kg F1 heifers of-
fered by volume vendor B&G
Crowe making $1050 a head,
or 386c/kg, the remainder of
the heifers sold from $570-
670/head. A single pen of
