Tick for tagging
AN audit carried out at the
Camperdown Livestock Selling
Centre by the Department of
Primary Industries (DPI) has
found that most sellers are
tagging their cattle correctly.
DPI leading animal health
officer, Leon Watt, said the de-
partment regularly audited sale-
yards and abattoirs for National
Livestock Identification System
(NLIS) tagging compliance in
"While NLIS technology
provides significant on-farm
benefits, such as the ability to
quickly and accurately record
production information, it also
plays a vital role in tracking
cattle for disease control and
residue management purposes,"
Mr Watt said.
"During a recent inspection
we found of the 478 cattle yarded,
only two were missing tags.
"The two cattle without tags
were identified by the saleyard
operator prior to sale and all
478 cattle were scanned and
transferred to the purchasers'
Property Identification Code
on the NLIS database within
24 hours of the sale."
Mr Watt said surveillance
activities undertaken by DPI
played a major role in protecting
Victoria's access to export
He said producers could max-
imise tag retention by carefully
following the instructions. Tags
correctly applied would ensure
full traceability for the life of
"The best time to attach an
NLIS tag is at marking on beef
properties and during weaning
on dairy farms, because cattle
are usually easier to restrain
when they are young," he
